It is the method of enforcement that people are objecting to. It is the 'show your papers' for no reason that ought to concern you.

There is no gray area here, these people have broken a law and, as such, need to be returned to their country of origin. Take a look at how Mexico treats those that cross into their country without legal permission and I think that you might have a different opinion about this.
