I second the recommendation. I've used it for years for internal and external lists, and it is easy to maintain and usually just does the right thing. It won't be slam-dunk to set up, though, at least not the first time through. I recommend Ubuntu/Postfix/Mailman with a bit of Amavis, Spam Assassin, SPF, and Postgrey thrown in for good measure. If people are going to be posting multimedia, the archives will bloat quickly and you'll need to increase the max message size.
