Pretty sure that the the driver vendors were at fault, in that they
thought that their new drivers were good enough. As I remember it was
video card drivers the most lacking, and the substitutions they made
were to the least feature rich driver. Printers were terrible as
well. Drivers for projectors were probably 3rd in worst case.

The OS needs all of those working and little to no substitutions that
the drivers pick. It took over a year to get all those vendors into a
quality space. Unfortunately that time frame was brutal for the brand
Vista.

Did M$ know that it wasn't correct and kept the name as Vista knowing
that the problems forthcoming would only damage the brand name
Windows? Not sure.

I got into Vista after 6 months of use letting a lot of the driver
bugs shake out. When W7 was available I jumped on it and have been
happy ever since.

Drivers are the key folks.

When I played with Ubuntu 9.10 I found crummy substitutions in their
driver selection as well, so it is not just one thing that acts
incorrectly it is the driver industry as a whole, not the OS
companies.

YMMV
