Matt, I'm living in browser development land these days and I can verify your observation that IE is just plain slow. Even really, really slow like you have observed. Surprisingly FireFox is usually the 2nd slowest browser.
If Firefox is fast for you, you might be surprised how much faster Chrome and Opera are. Although IE compatibility is critical for us, we strongly encourage our customers (to the point of begging) to use any browser but IE. BTW: Another very good browser these days is Apple Safari. (I suspect we're fighting the same battles as you).
