Mike,

Cat-5 degrades around 1000 ft. When there is a type of electronic resonance
field such as a fluorescent light generates along its path, the distance is
shorter. I recall Cat-3 was recommend to keep in increments of 3 or 7 feet,
though I never got a clear explanation.
