I have a Cat6e run from my gigabit switch in my basement, going underneath the 
back 
yard in a conduit, out to the barn, and then under another conduit to the 
garage. The 
cable doesn't break for about 300'. I don't notice any difference in quality of 
service from the end of that cable versus being plugged in to a 3' cable to the 
switch.
