We want to install tax preparation software on the server. Functionally similar to Turbo Tax. The interviewer will enter data into the software on site. He may or may not have Internet. When he returns to his office - which is different from the location of the server - he wants to be able to update the data on the server. It would be nice if he had Internet at a client's site to enter the data directly.
Everything else will be done locally to the server. Checking, preparing, assembly and e-filing. The remote user would be able to manipulate the tax software on the server, transfer documents to the server, and view faxes sent to the server. I am an accountant - although not a practicing one - and I believe internal controls apply mainly to company financial statements and processes. Tax preparation is filling out forms. Having said that, due to the sensitive nature of the data it is crucial to maintaining a very high level of security. Thank you all for your input! So far, I like the VPN as well as using the MAC address to allow only one laptop access.
