        Sometimes it's better to ask forgiveness than permission. :)

        Install git (or whatever your preference), and start using it. It 
doesn't cost anything, it doesn't take up a significant amount of disk space, 
and you'll be able to sleep more soundly at night. You can commit locally, and 
push changes to the server regularly. They don't have to know.
