It's gotta be the UPPER function me thinks... Any chance you can do a REPLACE ALL SERNO WITH UPPER(SERNO) and just be done with it? Maybe copy your table to a different one to play with and see what happens with your speed? Then change your INSERT/UPDATE code to force to UPPER?
