The real problem is MS has little incentive to actually "help" the user,
nor developers. Their bottom line is profit so if they're running low on
cash, they'll come up with some new buzzwords, throw out a new release of
the OS/Office/DB and announce and expiration date of previous versions.

Open source solutions have caused MS to be a bit more concerned about
actually producing something that works. You can thank OpenOffice for
keeping MS Office prices low. But alas most users are too confused, most
corporations too stupid, and most developers too lazy to see and act on the
state of things.

The up side is most forward-thinking corps. are already getting off MS -
but those are usually smaller ones that are more "flexible" and able to
actually make rational decisions. Users will probably continue to be a
mixed bag, at least for those that don't mind buying a new computer every
couple years. Research orgs are pretty much abandoning MS (smart...
expected I guess since they are rocket scientists after all). Developers,
heh, well what can I say. There will always be the pointy-clicky types that
love MS and don't really want to understand how software works. But it does
look like the really good ones are getting into open source. I guess
they're fed up with the 90 degree turns and unilateral mandates from MS.

The funny thing will be to see if MS abandons their own software and starts
using open source stuff. I wonder if that'll make people finally wake up.

:-)
