I realize some of these suggestions seem a bit far fetched, but if your
data is important to you then you do what you gotta do...

It may seem silly but I don't think driving a nail thru a drive or
shooting it full of holes is good enough - if someone really really
really wanted to read what was left of the drive, they could devise a
way to do that. It would just be missing some info but that doesn't mean
that the 1/4" of the surface you missed doesn't contain exactly what YOU
value most. Of course this is beyond the means of 99.99999999% of anyone
but doesn't mean it can't be done.

If I couldn't write all 0's and then all 1's or whatever it is these
wipe-drive things do then I wouldn't say the drive is clean regardless
of how strong a magnet you park it under.

If you want to be REALLY sure it doesn't fall into the wrong hands, just
pony up the $$$ for the new drive and keep the old one yourself and
throw it in the company safety deposit box with a note on it that says
"KEEP FOREVER".
