I would add:
Google uses Python internally. I believe the person who originally designed
Python is (or was) a Google employee.

Python works on Windows, Linux and Mac.

We are planning to convert from VFP to Python between now and 2015.

William,

One very enthusiastic vote for Python.

Works well with offline applications
Has dozens of web frameworks including famous ones like Django
Ed and Paul have created a VFP like framework for Python called Dabo

What I like: Clean syntax, tons of built-in libraries (affectionately
described as "Batteries Included") for everything from ftp to zip
compression. A large and growing community of developers and 3rd party
libraries.

Other paths to consider:
- Ruby
- PHP
- .NET
- Java
