Jeff,

I use OpenVPN for a very stable and reliable VPN connection from my 
desktop to a clients server. Essentially, that server's Windows share 
(it's a Linux box and I'm on WinXP) looks like Drive Z on my list of 
drives. But, it would work if it were Windows boxes on both ends, too.

For your client, you might want to set them up with Logmein Free...I've 
found that customers adapt easily to that arrangement and seem to 
understand how it works pretty quickly. And, it's free.

Other than that, there are a few very good remote access applications 
that aren't VPN, TightVNC, EchoVNC, etc.
