Personally I would advise NOT to use Logmein or similar services.
The performance of Remote Desktop/Terminal services is *far* superior.

Jeff, what exactly are the problems you are having?  Windows supports
VPN & Remote Desktop out of the box.

Be sure to enable TCP port 1723 to the internet for a PPTP VPN.
Windows 7 Home Premium is fine.  I'm running it now and VPN'd into the office.
