I have been doing this for over 35 years and have an opinion I will
express here. Everyone participating in this thread has good advice.
Without looking back I would focus on what Rick & Ed have to offer. As
a developer, your tools are the most important decision you make. When
everyone was excited about IBM and Lotus 123 and Dbase III a friend of
mine gave me FoxPro 2.0. I have made a very good living with FoxPro.
Today everyone is talking about all kinds of things. I have limited my
scope and am currently very successful.
My plan is to develop VFP 9 applications for the desktop using Visual
Maxframe Professional. I can put together an awesome app in a couple of
days and actually deliver it! Someone once told me to ship applications
while everyone else is developing them.
My long term goal is to use Python for everything and use the Dabo
framework for robust applications. I currently shell out to Python to
do a lot of stuff that VFP can't do. I will admit that there are some
cool things that I am not sure I can do in Dabo at this point.
I tell my customers "I don't do web apps" I can't afford the security
issues and all of my customers are small businesses and they are very
happy with my approach. I don't know if they will ever solve the
Internet security issues. Until then, we are shipping safe applications
for small businesses.
So for me the choice of tools is important but it is also important to
decide what my target market is.
Summary
VFP9 with VMP & Python instead of third party stuff
Eventually I will continue to use VFP9 as there is no reason for me
to change with my customers
I have customers that use Mac and a customer that is in Mexico.
Dabo and Python is my choice.
My only advise is to be happy with the job!!!!!!!!!!!
