No, nothing like that. Seems arbitrary. For example, I open the
"Downloads" directory and I get the behavior. Open a folder I created
inside of it, and it behaves normally.

It is very handy when looking at family photos, for example. I also
use the "prefs" for icon size when I want it to be permanent, but when
I am trying to find a particular photo, for example, this control
makes it very handy to zoom them up and back down later. Funny that
you don't have it. Try a folder with only images in it.
