Try the following:
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get install abcde
This will:
1. Update your package listing to the latest and greatest packages
2. Upgrade your system to take care of any old packages that need updated
3. Install abcde
You may be confusing apt by trying to upgrade and install at the same time.
