Just a wild guess: try to set-up properly your X config for a TV: create
a monitor with fixed frequency (15KHz, then 50 or 60Hz depending of your
country) and use this monitor to let X discover resolutions. I've heard
some cards won't display anything on video out unless they're set up for
the right frequencies.
