Of course a real python solution involving an existing implementation
should be a few lines of python that call into the existing
implementation...

Anyways, if I were in your situation, I would explain that I expected
that my python development costs would be about 5x my J development
costs, and they would be 10x if I had had to develop the python
version from scratch without first doing the J implementation.

If they agree to pay those costs, I'd go out and hire myself a good
python programmer to help me out with that part of the implementation.
