Another good reference on notation is the Graham - Knuth - Patashnik book CONCRETE MATHEMATICS a Foundation for Computer Science and the associated Concrete Math Companion by Ken Iverson. Chapter two of the respective books are on summation and notation.

The Iverson book is available to read in the j wiki - the other one for around $25 used, or perhaps at a library.

No, sigma considered harmful. In conventional notation there's big sigma
for summation and big pi for product. But how do you do max insert (>./)?
Min insert (<./)? And insert (^./)? Etc.

Infinite series (products, etc.) best done by having infinite vectors. See

Very nice, Linda, thanks.
That's just the example I needed.

I think I'm beginning to get the 'geist' of it now!
