Another good reference on notation is the Graham - Knuth - Patashnik
book CONCRETE MATHEMATICS a Foundation for Computer Science and the
associated Concrete Math Companion by Ken Iverson. Chapter two of the
respective books are on summation and notation.
The Iverson book is available to read in the j wiki - the other one for
around $25 used, or perhaps at a library.

No, sigma considered harmful. In conventional notation there's big sigma
for summation and big pi for product. But how do you do max insert (>./)?
