Modes are a bad, in a mild way, because they require learning.

But that does not mean that they are universally bad, and sometimes
modes are better than the alternatives.

That said, if you can make them easy to learn about, that is even
better.  And, if you can reduce the available options to the point
that modes are unnecessary, that can also be good (or bad, depending
on the point of whatever it is that you are implementing).
