If anyone is looking for a fully fledged example of OOJ take a look at the JOD addon. It's built from six classes and as many runtime objects as required. Most of the techniques people have mentioned in this thread are employed in JOD. Start with the class diagram in the PDF manual before wading into the source which is available in many forms with the most handy on GitHub.
