I would be tempted to explain in terms of 0 { y and then backtrack and show that 0 { 1 {. y is what you need to deal with empties (and is equivalent in all other contexts).
Related is that you've assumed your audience knows what 'item" and 'fill' means in the context of J - this seems like a reasonable assumption, but for that audience, it's likely that the {. monad would be review of mostly understood concepts, and mixing things up a bit might help hold interest.
