I don't consider this a good reason.  Too much tied to current technology.
(Tongue-in-check:  What's a cacheline, let alone having a third one?)

If rank < 2^6 can be switched back to rank < 2^31 (or 2^63?) as easily as
it can be switched back the other way, I guess it's OK.
