I say
#: y 2#: y enough 2s as needed
by which I mean, 'the 2 in #: is considered as repeated enough to
ensure that all significant bits of y are converted'. I'll take
your point and I will word this better, but I hope that I
have the idea right.

I decided that rank was so basic to understanding J that I would
not be able to explain it on the reference card, but I'll add a few
examples as you suggest.
