I fiddled with the code a bit, but there didn't seem to exist a single
point to check the shape of contents of a box -- I think I have to
change rc, and take but am not sure of how. In other words, it was
difficult for me to change the code so that a Hangul letter is treated
as two bytes long, instead of three bytes long(UTF-8).

Could anyone give me some guide?

I have added a model of boxed array display to the
J Wiki:

http://www.jsoftware.com/jwiki/Essays/Boxed_Array_Display

The model can be a starting point for displaying
boxed arrays which contain characters that require
multiple display positions.
