Hello Björn, I guess it is the BOM at the beginning of file that confuse you, fread itself knows nothing about BOM, or encoding whatsoever. since fread is a byte reader it will read everything in verbatim.
I recommend emeditor (a very good unicode enabled text editor from japan), it allows to save as various unicode format and many code page too.
