To make the record straight This is not confusing me one little bit
I have lived with the codepage problems and Unicode differences for years Notepad seems to be doing an excelent job of handling different kinds of Unicodes Word has an option alt+x to toggle back and from Unicodes a. i. is good enough for me to see the differences in J There are others than me that may not know what is going on Notepad makes a difference between Big endian and little endian have 255 254 and 254 255 in the beginning of an Unicode file and 239 187 191 in the beginning of an UTF file J writes them out without any beginning I think it was pretty well demonstrated by the use of a. i. 2006/10/12, bill lam <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:
Hello Björn, I guess it is the BOM at the beginning of file that confuse you, fread itself knows nothing about BOM, or encoding whatsoever. since fread is a byte reader it will read everything in verbatim. I recommend emeditor (a very good unicode enabled text editor from japan), it allows to save as various unicode format and many code page too. A freeware edition is also available http://www.emeditor.com/ Try saving files using utf8/utf16le/utf16be with and without bom, and then fread to see the difference. > Same results a,c and d do not display in J > Even if all the files look the same in Notepad and e and b look the same in > J they are not the same > > e=b > |length error > | e =b > |[-0] > > e-:b > 0 > -- regards, bill ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For information about J forums see http://www.jsoftware.com/forums.htm
