To make it run I did the following to your script
(1) removed 'filefns' from the line 'require ....'
(2) removed the line 'takeout =: 0 : 0'
It then loaded on my system

It also tested out with a small rank 4 sparse array.
The scripts use the machine language form of the variable to write and read
to file. That provides a workaround instead of using the file utilities.
