Glad to hear it worked OK for you.  I use this all the time to work with
the large Netflix dataset; storing the vars in their native J form makes
this
pretty fast.

(1) removed 'filefns'  from  the line 'require ....'
(2) removed the line  'takeout =: 0 : 0'

It also tested out with a small rank 4 sparse array.

The scripts use the machine language form of the variable to write and
read
to file.  That provides a workaround instead of using the file utilities.
