>My question is if it is possible to get to that stage without restarting J?

This depends on the specific problem. Tracking down the conflict can be a
frustrating and time consuming endeavor. Usually it's fastest and easiest to
restart J.

The question is: why do you balk at doing so? It's not like J has a extensive
boot time. Do you want to retain your input log? Your IJX history? Certain
specific names/definitions? The layout of your windows?

If so, you have some work to do. Anyway, this question comes up periodically
on the Forums. Please see:

Oleg demonstrates how to use J to restart J in one line:

Roger's notes on which parameters need be reset, and states that
strictly resetting J is not possible:

Devon's workspace script, which will allow you to persist selected
names to disk, that they may be reloaded in a fresh J session:

I'll consider writing up a Guide on this.
