That's precisely why we have boxes.  Loose typing, the wave of the future!

The semantics are consistent:  the whole left argument is catented to the whole 
right argument, then  pp  is applied between the items of the result.  That is, 
A is treated precisely the same as the result of, say  2 pp A  or  4 pp 3 pp 2 
pp A  .

The only thing "special" about A is that it's an initial condition.
