I used to use DDE as the interface to my stock-quote server.
It caused no end of headaches.

It took lots of CPU. So I got a bigger machine.

Then Windows XP came along. DDE started giving weird errors
that smelled strongly of 'FIFO overrun'. With the kind
help of Eric Iverson, who built a couple of special builds
with debug code inserted into the J DDE driver (try getting
THAT kind of support from other languages!), I verified
that it was, in fact, a FIFO overrun, and not on the J end.

I came up with a kludge: I set the process priority of the
receiving process very high, to eliminate the overrun. That
worked.

Then Vista came along. DDE FIFO overruns again. I suspect that
this was because I needed some Administrator amulet to get the
process-priority change to work...

...but I'll never know, because I found a quote server with a socket
interface. I was able to scrap DDE. I haven't felt so good
since I upgraded from dialup Internet to broadband.

No more DDE for me.
