I guess I misinterpreted this sentence:

I took it to mean "I don't see the criterion which a human would use to prefer 
the short form", rather than "I don't see the
criterion the interpreter uses to produce the short form".

I also find reverse engineering the interpreter fun, and finding these pivots 
can be a pastime.  The fact that I don't know the
exact value of pivot doesn't render it a bug, however.
