This sounds like an Ubuntu problem.  I use emacs for J work on the PC most
of the time (occasionally I also use emacs for J on a Mac) and have not
encountered this problem.  I have rarely run into an emacs problem when I
somehow change my keyboard to be "AZERTY" but I don't know how I do this.
