Yes I agree that using colour is probably the best solution here. The 
background colour for the cell containing the primitive could be coloured 
according to the primitive's part of speech. AFAICS the only primitive whose 
part of speech differs depending on "context" is underscore which is a Noun or 
Other - I'd suggest colouring it as for Nouns.

As Fraser suggests it would be sensible to provide a key that maps the colours 
to the parts of speech.
