I've seen recently that the developers view hooks as a mistake, and considered the alternative h. conjunction.
I agree they were a mistake. My view is they make reading parentheses harder. If there were only forks then: if right phrase is a noun, then whole parenthesis resolves to a noun if left verb is just [ or ] then it is probably some variation of what a hook what have been, but explains rather than rely on your memory for how a hook is expanded.
