Hi Bill -

Sorry I don't have any more info on this.

Of course, databases tend to concentrate on back-end processing, providing
no UI components.

I have a bit of an obsession with user-friendly data grids and visual query
builders, and I've been searching for years for a decent open-source package
which offers these.

Many years ago I recall running across some VCL data grids for Delphi from
companies like FIBPlus and Devrace which looked promising. (As we know,
Delphi seems to have fallen by the wayside as a development tool for
Windows.) These components from FIBPlus and Devrace may also be available in
C++ editions so they may be usable in a VB environment rather than .NET.
They may also offer open-source versions.

There is a set of components for .NET and WPF from Xceed which has a bunch
of really nice data-grids. I don't think they're open source.

Finally in the browser area there is of course the recent plethora of
open-source Ajax libraries (JQuery, YUI, MooTools, DWR, Tibco, ExtJS) which
have started to appear, some of which offer some fairly sophisticated data
grids. My personal favorite, in terms of sheer "wow" factor, is ExtJS. They
have an excellent on-line demo here:

<http://www.extjs.com/deploy/dev/examples/>There's also a couple of
libraries built on top of ExtJS: SmartClient / SmartGWT, and two other
combos of Ext+GWT (I keep getting them mixed up - one is called GXT I
think). I heard that ExtJS pissed off a lot of developers by changing their
licencing from LGPL to GPL, but it does offer one of the most
attractive-looking UIs for the web.

I have no idea how any of these might work with J. I would love to be able
to make browser-based databases with, say, ExtJS on the front-end and J on
the back-end. I think I might be able to get the basics worked out, but I'm
concerned I might not know how to handle important issues like validating
and updating data from multiple concurrent users.
