cmd-w is the shortcut to close a window in mac which cannot be revoked by
applications. Either 
1. you mistakenly pressed cmd-w for ctrl-w, or
2. GTKIDE coerces ctrl-w to cmd-w and it then closes the top-level window 
inevitably.

If it was the latter case, then please report it as a bug.
