That is it! I changed that line to
gtk_widget_set_can_focus ::0: canvas,1
and now the plot appears.
The rendering is, however, much slower than before.
I'll have to check the Gtk version later -- this machine is on
the departmental system in the U Md astronomy department, and
we are using CentOS.
