Rudi,

I am using almost the same system as you with Safari, also,
and things work as expected with editing/saving. I notice in your step
4 below, that the box characters are on separate lines and the
horizontal bars are very wide. Are you using a nonstandard font in
Safari. Looking in Preferences|Appearance I see I am using Times 18
and Monaco 13 and Default encoding: Western (ISO Latin 1).

Could you try that, please?
