Dear J Forum: This thread has made me curious about the name. I can understand APL for 'A Programming Language'. When did the Iversons (Chris too?) begin to improve APL, and why did they decide to name it 'J'? More generally, what was the pre-history (Urgeschichte) of J, and why was the need felt to move away from APL?

So (in case that subject ever comes up) how about "Pythagoras"? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For information about J forums see http://www.jsoftware.com/forums.htm
