I guess it could but then that verb will have no interesting result because only its side effect is relevant. However J generally uses value semantics and meant to be side effect free with exceptions of foreign conjunctions and random number.
incidentally the name x and the value of the name x are different, not sure which one is intended to hold the rhs of =. in you example, but either way there will be error in + or =.
