seeing these clear solutions to this problem makes it obvious i've got a 
totally wrong handle on how to deal with boxed data.

a kind of fog descends and i imagine i need to incredibly complicated 
things to make a relatively simple op work.

so .. basically .. it's like : stick [ &.> ] on the front and then just 
deal with it as if it's a normal array?
