I understand your desire to set of J sentences from commentary. I've
discovered that it can be a bit tricky to write about J because of the way J
makes punctuation meaningful.

My preference is to use parentheses to identify J, setting it apart from
English within which it is being discussed. Square brackets have meanings
that make it harder to read J that's right up against them. Parentheses, on
the other hand, rarely conflict.

People will work to figure it out whether you set them off one way, or
another, or not at all. But we might find some presentations easier going
than others!
