I agree with Bill, sounds like our old friend again... http://www.jsoftware.com/jwiki/System/Installation/J602/Mac/MacSnowLeopardInstallBug ...which lists several ways of getting round the problem, with their own advantages and disadvantages.
But if it's a new iMac, won't it be running Lion, not Snow Leopard? If so, could you do me a favour please, check out the above link and report back on the list what works for you... or if nothing does? I'd like to keep this wiki page up-to-date.
