All I had  was the code which looked interesting.  But my journey has been
to figure what it was designed to do.  I must have broken it apart in the
wrong place but I haven't mastered the new part yet.  Maybe the one who
wrote it will let us know their intent.

Was the original problem to sort characters representing digits?  By the 
time I entered it appeared to be, grade characters representing digits, 
and do that without using &. .
