Your workaround was successful for my setup.  plotdemos works fine with FF8 now.

I tried plotdemos 22 on IE8.  It ran for several minutes and then displayed a 
partial version of the plot, with most of the b/w plot and 1/2 of the color 
plot.

plotdemo 7 does not display the Dots on FF8, IE8 or IE9:

The surface plots appear to have less resolution on IE8 than IE9 or FF8:
