OK, done and pushed. Please continue with the SPIRES legacy keyword
mappings.
BTW, note that the legacy field names stay displayed in the UI in their
legacy form, which is why the substitution does not happen "before
search_engine ever sees the user's request" as you mention in comment:5.
I think the current behaviour is better from the point of view that we
don't force the new search field names upon people. So they can convert
into the new syntax progressively. (This is also what SPIRES seems to be
doing, e.g. `find t quark` and `find title quark` displays either `t` or
`title` in the UI, respectively.)
