Hi gang:

In the recent jabber log I saw Joe/Jay/Travis mentioning that there were
some troubles again with `[email protected]' chat room, and
that Joe may be willing to look at installing our own jabber server at
SLAC. I caught only parts of the conversation, so:

1) What kind of troubles these were? The old troubles with intermittent
service from jabber.org? Or auto-connection troubles related to
password protection? Or something else, more fundamental?

2) As I mentioned some time ago, we were planning to have a jabber
server here at CERN shared with the Indico app (and possibly with ATLAS
groups etc, many are interested). An experimental jabber service is now
available, so we can give it a try to see whether it performs better.

Currently, (i) the service is still open to inside-CERN only, so if you
access it from outside of CERN, you will need to set up an ssh tunnel
for the time being; (ii) you have to use your regular CERN account
credentials, it does not accept any other identity for the time being.
E.g. for Pidgin you can use the following settings:

   Username: jdoe
   Domain: jabber.cern.ch
   Password: <regular jdoe's CERN account password>
   [x] Require SSL/TLS
   Connect server: jabber.cern.ch
   Connect port: 5222

   Chat room: [email protected]

3) The box is run by our group, and we can set up things later according
to what we always wanted, e.g. central chat room logging, e.g. use it
for micro-tweeting about daily progress, etc. Currently this is a test
service only, so let's give it some stress testing first...

Best regards
